Ferdowsi School - Westchester

The Iranian American Society of New York is proud to announce the expansion of its educational arm with the opening of its Ferdowsi School – Westchester branch in White Plains, NY.

Registration for classes for the 2009-2010 academic year was held on September 11, 2009, for the eager students, teachers, parents and administrators. Classes began immediately following the registration process.

This school was established due to a demand for Farsi classes for children by the Iranian American community residing in Westchester County and lower Connecticut. The school currently holds classes at the Ridgeway Elementary School in White Plains on Fridays from 5:00-7:00pm. Classes range from Kindergarten through 2nd Grade and are taught by a group of highly capable teachers with considerable experience. Although still in its infancy, the school has approximately 30 students enrolled.

The Kindergarten class caters to families with children too young to attend 1st Grade. The curriculum focuses on the introduction of the Farsi alphabet and numbers through images and sounds. Games and songs in addition to arts and crafts are added to create a fun atmosphere.

The 1st Grade focus is on a deeper introduction of the alphabet and phonetics, in oral and written form for children already familiar with the English alphabet. The 2nd Grade involves a more advanced curriculum including grammar and vocabulary.

Ferdowsi School – Westchester hopes to introduce and celebrate a variety of Iranian festivals such as Mehregan (in the fall), Yalda (in the winter) and Norooz (in the spring). This way, students will become familiarized with the Iranian culture and traditions at the same time as they are learning the language. The success of this school and its programs is dependant on the cooperation and commitment of the Iranian American community for whom this school was established.
