IAS CULTURAL CENTER... A HOME FOR OUR COMMUNITY — September 2010

The Iranian American Society of New York (IAS) is proud to announce the release of its Newsletter for the Iranian community in the greater New York region. As those of you who have been members of this Society know, IAS was established for the "purposes of promoting goodwill and cooperation among its members; providing assistance to individuals of Iranian descent or related to such individuals by the act of marriage, promoting the exchange of ideas among its members; discovering, procuring and preserving whatever may relate to natural, civil literary history and welfare of Iranians." IAS is always striving to do more for its members and our community in order to keep the interests and involvement of every Iranian, member or non-member of the Society, within its reach. With the current events in the world and the media's obsession to try to portray Iran in bad light, it becomes every Iranian-Americans duty to make certain that our next generation will not be viewed in this manner. Understand that this Society was formed at a time where the image of Iran and its people were arguably at their lowest, during the hostage crisis of 1979. The ambitions and goals of the originators of IAS prove to us that anything is possible and that we should never in any way, shape or form shy away from who we are as Iranians.

Though IAS is and will always be a non-political and non-religious organization which focuses mostly on the Iranian Culture and the Arts, it is nevertheless every Iranian-American's responsibility to repair and relinquish that vision of greatness which is truly us. When discussing greatness, we as Iranians know all our achievements and accomplishments for mankind throughout the millennia of our existence. We can and have been portraying good light through our poetry, music, paintings, and our many scholars. With all that we have to offer, we, the Iranian population of the greater New York region, have for the most part failed to bring these talents and scholars under one roof, a place where we can call our home. The Board of Directors of IAS, some interested individual members, and guests are now in serious search of that home, "The Iranian American Society Cultural Center." It has for the most part been a dream to anyone that is of Iranian descent to have a place to gather, celebrate, and be one real community. Now, that dream is becoming a reality. With members that are committed to the success of ideas, it will be impossible for this dream not to become a reality. The Board has already begun the process.

On July 26, 2010, individuals representing IAS, who shall for the purposes of this article remain nameless, met with the Nassau County Executive, Edward Mangano, and his staff, in order to seek the help of the county in achieving this goal. There have now been four meetings amongst the Board and some members to plan the many options that are available to the Society. Further, committees have been created and members are being assigned. The energy and excitement have for the most part been extremely positive and promising. It is now time for all of us, as a cohesive and united community, to make this dream become a reality.

On September 19, 2010, at 3:00 p.m., there will be a General Meeting held for ALL Iranians in the greater New York region at the Ferdowsi School of Long Island, located at the Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 Cedar Swamp Road, Brookville, New York, 11545. This General Meeting will allow the Board of Directors to introduce this idea in greater detail to all attendees. At this meeting, members of IAS will also have the opportunity to join various committees that have been formed in order to help speed achieving this goal. If you have any questions, concerns, or wish to be involved with the IAS Cultural Center, please feel free to contact us at (516) 569-3841, via email at rhedayati@aol.com or via mail at IAS, P.O.
