THE FERDOWSI SCHOOL
The Ferdowsi School began its 2006-2007 academic year on September 8, 2006, when over 40 students enrolled in classes ranging from kindergarten through advanced. Classes meet on Fridays from 5:30-7:30pm with the exception of school holidays and occasional closings due to inclement weather.

The Ferdowsi School is fortunate and proud to have a team of highly trained and experienced teachers. It is with the evaluation of these teachers, along with the child's age, knowledge, maturity and ability to read, write and speak Farsi, that students are placed in appropriate classes. In an effort to establish a strong foundation of Farsi in the students, every grade is taught in two years.

In order to familiarize the students with Iranian culture and traditions, the school celebrates Mehregan - the fall festival, Yalda - the winter equinox and Norooz - the Persian New Year. This year the children celebrated Mehregan on October 13th. A brief history of Mehregan in Farsi and English was followed by an arts and crafts project, this year consisting of making a place-mat and decorating it with fall motifs.

Yalda was celebrated on December 15th, during which an interactive explanation and Q&A on Yalda was followed by a Farsi version of Bingo, organized and moderated by two of the school's young assistant teachers - both of whom are past students of the school. The excitement generated by the activity was followed by a reception organized by the parents.

The Ferdowsi School Norooz celebration is scheduled for March 11, 2007. Parents have been urged to become more involved in the preparation and execution of this program. In past years the program has included: traditional dances in costume, songs, jokes, musical instruments, skits, etc.

The school's Graduation ceremony is scheduled for May 18, 2007 (unless snow-day make-ups are necessary). During this program, each class gives a brief performance followed by the handing out of diplomas by teachers. The year comes to an end with a warm end-of-the-year celebration with students, parents, teachers and directors. Planning for the following school year keeps the directors busy throughout the summer.

In an effort to provide the students and their families with more activities, the school has begun introducing field trips and similar outings. Negotiations are generally necessary in order to secure discount/group-rate tickets. Last year, the school arranged a trip to the Big Apple Circus, and on June 9, 2006 a group of students, their siblings and parents enjoyed a day at the circus! This year, the school is working on arranging a trip to The Bronx Zoo in the spring.
